Position Summary
The Group Copy Supervisor (GCS) is responsible for managing all aspects of copy and related data for his/her accounts. In addition, the GCS should have excellent relationships with clients - to the degree that clients rely on the GCS as much as on the account team. The GCS should be a creative leader at the agency, capable of producing imaginative, unusual, top-quality creative ideas across all assignments, on short notice if needed. The GCS should be able to supervisor and mentor junior writers while managing a heavy workload.
Responsibilities
- Produces correct and timely work, including a wide range of materials for professional and, if appropriate, consumer audiences
- Contributes to the conceptual process - alone or as part of a group - by generating ideas for existing clients
- Develops strong client relationships through participation in market research, presenting creative concept development, and strategic direction
- Obtains additional background and current development information through research, if necessary (Internet, medical publications)
- Reviews advertising trends, consumer surveys, and other data regarding marketing of specific and related goods and services to formulate presentation approach
- Works with Art Director to review creative strategies and to develop dynamic and ownable concepts
- Reviews copy with supervisor and Account Executive to ensure adherence to strategic focus and tone
- Supervises and trains writers, as needed
- Mentors developing writers on specific assignments, even if the writers are not direct reports
- Fields questions and defends positions effectively, both internally and externally
- Communicates agency point of view to client
- Reads raw and/or published data and is able to translate it into product features and benefits (at the least is able to ask meaningful questions)
- Prepares and annotates references for submission to client’s medical/legal review process
- Works closely with editors to achieve crisp, clear writing, and claims that are unimpeachable
- Communicates openly and collegially with all team members
- Collaborates with Account Services in thinking strategically about marketing plans for products
- Suggests ways for the Art Director to graphically present the data
- May contribute to more than one account as needed
- Models senior-level agency attitude and behavior (comes in on time, works proactively, thinks ahead)
- Acts as creative lead on account
- Demonstrates outstanding creative/conceptual abilities
- Contributes at a high level on all agency accounts
- Supervises and mentors junior writers when appropriate, spending as much time as needed to develop the writers so they can contribute effectively to the agency
- MUST be able to write copy that:
- Is concise, clear, creative, and supportable
- Displays good sentence structure
- Has overall good composition and a logical flow
- Is grammatically correct
- Has no spelling errors
- Demonstrates copy leadership on his/her account.
- Has in-depth understanding of the assigned account, treatment category, relevant physician specialties, etc.
- Exhibits excellent presentation skills
- Key resource for all other members of the team.
- Commands the writing, the data, and the conceptual direction for the account.
- Partners with the Account Supervisor to lead the account toward success
- Strong, creative resource for the department
- Demonstrates leadership qualities, passion for the work, dynamic presenting skills, stellar creative powers, and respect for coworkers
- Able to contribute at the very highest level whether the discussion revolves around concepts, written copy, strategy, market dynamics, product issues, or any other aspect of client business
- Develops innovative solutions to team concerns should problems arise

- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a pharmaceutical writer
