Position Description
The Medical Writer is responsible for providing medical writing for proposals and continuing medical education (CME) activities for physicians and healthcare professionals in compliance with ACCME, FDA, OIG, and PhRMA Code guidelines. The Medical Writer will develop appropriate medical content, including needs assessments, learning objectives, activity overviews, abstracts, speaking points for slide presentations, posttests, evaluations, and outcomes measurements, as well as review medical content for accuracy, scientific rigor, and absence of bias. Excellent maturity and professionalism are required, as this position will work closely with world-renowned physician experts to develop educational activities. The successful candidate will be self-motivated and able to work individually, as well as participate on a cross-functional team of experts in various functional roles. Excellent project management, organization, and time management skills are necessary to be successful in this role.
The candidate must possess an MS or PhD in a science or health-related field and three or more years of medical writing experience with work samples available on request. Experience in oncology, neuroscience, women’s health, or infectious disease is desired. Experience in CME or educational design is preferred. This position will interface with a team lead and also a cross-functional team including the business development team, the Managing Director, and the Senior Manger of the CME Program and Compliance.
While in this position, the Medical Writer will:
- Report to the Team Leader of Educational Design and Development
- Contribute to forecast goals by contributing to proposals that secure new business
- Will be required to write robust, compelling needs assessments. Needs assessments must be robust and be based upon multiple sources such as literature searches
- Must be familiar with the medical specialty boards and maintain certification (MOC) requirements and contribute to educational theory and educational design
- Be able to develop learning objectives, abstracts, speaking points for slide presentations, and slide content
- Primary developer of content for CME programs
- Identify titles, topic titles, suggested faculty, and target audience
- Provide medical writing of abstracts (program description and statement of need) and learning objectives
- Be widely recognized for expertise in understanding continuing medical education writing
- Demonstrate outstanding team and cross-functional teaming with inclusiveness and excellent communication
- Participate in one’s own continuing education required by the company and by the needs of the position
- Follow all company policies and processes, including submitting time and expenses on time
- Graduate degree (Master’s degree or PhD) in science or health-related field; continues learning in pertinent disease states and treatments in those areas
- CME medical writing experience
- Familiarity with educational design, as evidenced by writing learning objectives that target closing educational gaps with learner
- Medical writing experience in at least one of the following areas: oncology, neuroscience, women’s health, infectious disease
- Complete understanding and support of the corporate vision
- Ability to align with one’s own team and build synergy between the other teams
- Strong experience in needs assessments for proposals and proven success in having those proposals accepted by commercial supporters
- Contribute to the strategy for proposal writing to increase the quality
- Thorough and resourceful literature searches and identification of other information sources for needs assessments
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
